Out With The Old, In With The New?

One of the biggest debates has been is the development of technology affecting journalism, in terms of old media versus new media?

This development has enhanced the experience of receiving news. Today’s media is so diverse in its audience; therefore, different media publications are needed. Due to its diversity, companies have to create their perfect niche. The demographic they are targeting has to connect with the content they are putting out. In doing so, they are establishing a place where ongoing conversations can occur that involve the audience.

A major effect on the type of media used is based on the speed of media consumption. Media consumption has increased at high speed based on these technological advances. There are people who are traditionalists and those who are news grazers. Concluding that traditionalists are those who read whole newspapers and sit through news segments, while new grazers are those that only look at news for a short period of time usually via social media.

This is where the use of old media and new media compliment each other. One can quickly expose a news story while the other provides news coverage in its entirety. For example, if one were to see a tweet or a hashtag regarding a situation, 9/10 there will be a link that leads them to the story’s full coverage. In the same manner, they can be exposed to a networks air time and/or to a network’s newspaper. This creates familiarity. Due to this, if one were to see that same companies newspaper while getting a coffee, they are more likely to pick it up.

Ultimately , the development of technology is still allowing for both old media and new media to have a strong standing in the consumption of media coverage based on the different needs and wants of the consumer.
