Jumping Into Journalism

The JMS 220 class I am enrolled in had the privilege of having Jerry McCormick come in and inform us about the different aspects of journalism. McCormick gave us insight on the things we need to keep in mind in jump starting our careers.

He emphasized on the importance of creating good relationships with peers and getting involved as much as possible. McCormick believes that the world works in mysterious ways and one day the person that you were once sitting next to in college can have the opportunity to give you the job you have been dreaming of. I am a firm believer that connections will get you farther in life than anything else. Connections give you the ability to get to places that may not have been as accesible without that relationship. In this process, the Self-Determination ethical approach has to be valued as people are not a means to an end. Relationships that are formed must be genuine.

McCormick encouraged all of the students to get involved in any way possible and to never stop being involved until you have gotten to where you want. For the students of San Diego State University, there are many clubs and organizations within the school and surrounding areas that serve a great purpose for future journalists. McCormick founded the San Diego Association of Black Journalist to create diversity in the workplace. This organization’s purpose is to straighten the practices of aspiring journalists and to push them to bring different perspectives to the world.

McCormick’s speech was very inspiring and left us with knowledgeable information. Our dreams and passions are solely for us and no-one will get you there but yourself. You have to put in the work and never give up. I will leave you guys here with the question of, “what are you doing to get one step closer to your dreams?”
